Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

Pregnant women may have more yeast infections during the third trimester. During this trimester excessive hormonal fluctuations mean the woman’s body pH will change and may become a breeding ground for candida yeast (a bacteria). Pregnant women also often become insatiable for sugar-rich or white flour containing foods. These sugars and refined carbohydrates increase even further the risk of a yeast infection.

While the yeast infection is unlikely to cause problems for the unborn baby, it is in the best interests of mother and baby to clear it up in a safe and comfortable way.

Yeast Infection Pregnancy Treatment

First thing to do to fight a yeast infection during your pregnancy is avoid wearing jeans, legging, panty hose every day. Avoid combination cough medicines that contain several drugs and stick with a single product.

Boric acid can be very useful for women that have not had good results from over-the-counter anti-fungal medication. It is a very mild acid that won't harm you but slightly changes the pH in the vagina to discourage yeast growth and allow the bacteria who naturally keep it in check to re-establish themselves.

To counteract the negative affects of antibiotics if needed, the your doctor or specialist may recommend taking a probiotic, which builds back up the healthy bacteria that can be destroyed by antibiotics. Medications are used for 1 to 7 days, depending on the type.
